Browns predicted to start rookie QB in Week 1 vs. Bengals

The Cleveland Browns' quarterback competition remains one of the NFL's most intriguing position battles.

They've got two veterans, Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett. And then they've got two rookies, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders.

There are about two-and-a-half months to make the call on who starts on Sept. 7 against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 1.

NFL.com's Daniel Jeremiah is going against the consensus thinking that one of the more experienced QBs will get the first start of the season.

"Talent wise I think both those guys have a huge advantage over Kenny Pickett," Jeremiah said on the Rich Eisen Show. "I think Joe Flacco is just in case you don't think you can be competent at the position. Then you insert Joe. I think their Week 1 starter. I think it's going to be one of those two rookies."

His logic is pretty sound, which he explained further.

"I think you've got to learn this year," Jeremiah said. "Next year at this time they have to know what they have in those two rookies. They have to see them... You have to evaluate these two kids that you just drafted so before this next draft you have some clarity of what you have on campus."

Bingo.

The Browns could have one (or two, with Jacksonville's pick) top-10 selections in the 2026 NFL Draft, which is believed to be a much stronger QB offering than 2025.

Cleveland has to know how high of a priority the quarterback position is entering next offseason.

Neither Flacco nor Pickett will help them solve that. All they can do is determine if either Gabriel or Sanders is worth keeping around.

No time like Week 1 to jump right in and start making those determinations.
