The group stage concludes on Tuesday, and we already know of three teams who will contest the quarterfinals. Certain others have got to start getting points on the board if they are to join them in the next round.

Only eight nations will progress from the groups to the next round, and there is still plenty to play for as we head towards the end of matchday two on Sunday.

Gold Cup 2025 format and rules

The group stages comprises 16 teams divided into four groups of four. Each team plays the others in their group once. Three points are awarded for a win, one for a draw, and none for a defeat.

The top two teams from each of those pools — i.e. those with the most points — progress to the quarterfinal stage. In the event of teams finishing tied on points, tiebreaker rules come into play. You can read all about those here.

The knockout stages is a single-elimination format. Teams play one-off 90-minute matches (their opponents are pre-determined by the bracket); if the scores are level by the end of the 90, there is a 30-minute period of extra time. If there is still no winner after that, a penalty shootout decides who goes through.

The four quarterfinal winners progress to the semifinals, and the winners of those games reach the final on July 6. There is no third-place playoff game.
