Browns owner's role in Shedeur Sanders draft pick revealed after historic slide

5 hours ago 2

The Cleveland Browns had already drafted a quarterback, Dillon Gabriel, in the third round.

They couldn't possibly be a landing spot for Colorado's Shedeur Sanders, could they?

But there they were, the fifth round at No. 144 overall, taking Sanders after his historic NFL Draft free fall.

"If you liked Shedeur Sanders enough to draft him, you wouldn't have drafted Dillon Gabriel," NFL insider James Palmer said in a Bleacher Report production.

"If you made the trade to give up Travis Hunter to get an extra first-round pick in 2026 to get a quarterback, you shouldn't have drafted two in the 2025 class," Palmer added.

That's where the question of who made the call on this pick comes in.

"There is some talk that this was somewhat of an owner pick," Palmer said.

Jimmy Haslam greenlighted the Deshaun Watson trade, and he recently admitted that was a disaster.

If he indeed got his hands on another QB move, there's some risk there.

To be fair to Haslam on this one, landing Sanders in the fifth round isn't the same as trading for Watson amid off-field allegations while giving up a gigantic picks haul and massive guaranteed contract.

The Browns wouldn't confirm such a thing, of course. But their draft plan doesn't add up otherwise.

Now, the NFL world waits to see what happens with Sanders and the rest of the quarterbacks in Cleveland.

The Sanders draft selection could age well, or it could turn out very, very poorly.
