The Pittsburgh Steelers’ notable quarterback move on Saturday night (agreeing to a one-year deal with Aaron Rodgers) has opened the door for another noteworthy offseason move.
Essentially, the Steelers officially have four signal-callers on their roster, making it likely the franchise will trim their QB room before the start of the 2026-27 season.
ClutchPoints’ Garrett Kerman believes Pittsburgh should retain Rodgers, Will Howard, and Drew Allar while trading their 22-year-old QB misfit to the Cleveland Browns.
“No team in the NFL has more quarterback chaos heading into 2026 than the Cleveland Browns,” Kerman wrote Monday. “The quarterback room features Deshaun Watson, who has not played a significant NFL snap since October 2024, and second-year players Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel, both of whom did not have standout rookie campaigns.”
“Both signal-callers averaged fewer than 200 passing yards per game in their respective starts, and neither has locked down the starting job. New head coach Todd Monken has openly stated that reps won't be split evenly and suggested he is keeping an open mind about the competition, which signals the job is very much up for grabs.”
“At 6-foot-5 and 235 pounds with a 66.5% completion rate and a passer rating of 153.5 in his best college season at Penn State in 2024, Allar fits the profile of what Monken wants to build around. A late-round pick swap would likely be enough to pry him loose from Pittsburgh, and for Cleveland, that is an extraordinarily low-risk move with franchise-altering upside. “
Allar’s astonishing arm talent, advantageous size, processing chops, and anticipatory skills helped him land with the Steelers in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft (No. 76 overall). Allar finished his collegiate career with 633 completions for 7,402 yards, 61 touchdowns, and only 13 interceptions (he endured a season-ending ankle injury five games into his senior season).
Although Allar's skill set has clearly enticed Pittsburgh, ESPN’s Brooke Pryor recently reported that the Steelers are attempting to ‘uninstall everything he learned with the Big Ten program and essentially return to square one.
Combine that with the fact that Allar is already buried behind three other QBs on the Steelers depth chart (presumably), and it’s easy to envision a scenario where Pittsburgh moves on from the rookie signal-caller before he even appears in a game with the franchise.
The Browns would be a fascinating landing spot for Allar, to say the least, as, unlike the Steelers, there’s no telling who will start the 2026-27 season as QB No. 1.
Keep an eye out for a potential offseason trade involving Allar.
