Browns haven't won vs. Partriots in New England since Bill Belichick was Cleveland's head coach

The Cleveland Browns are making the trip up to the Northeast to face the New England Patriots on the road for their Week 8 matchup. Coming off a dominant win over the Miami Dolphins in Week 7, Cleveland will look to get their third win this season in a tough matchup.

But playing the Patriots in New England won't be tough just due to it being on the road or facing an ascendant quarterback in Drake Maye. The Browns will have to fight off a 33-year history with the Patriots.

Week 8 of the 1992 season was the last time the Browns beat the Patriots while on the road. Adam Schefter of ESPN pointed out that on the sidelines for this last Browns win in New England was head coach Bill Belichick. Except, he wasn't the Patriots' head coach; he was coaching the Browns.

The Browns are going for their first win on the road vs. the Patriots since 1992 in Week 8

"Last time the Browns won in Foxboro was Week 8 of the 1992 season," Schefter writes, "when Cleveland's head coach was Bill Belichick."

While the two teams are both in the AFC, just how many times have the Browns had a chance to break this streak?

Since 1992, the Browns have made the trip up to New England to face the Patriots seven times. The first loss to begin this streak came in 1995, when the Patriots beat the Browns 17-14 in early September.

Six years later, in 2001, the Browns lost 27-16 to the Patriots to officially get the streak underway. After a 9-3 loss in 2003, the Browns' streak rose to three games, and over 10 years without a win in Foxboro.

A 34-17 loss in 2007 during the Patriots' historic offensive season added to the streak, and six years later in 2013, a 27-26 loss would have Cleveland raise their losing streak in New England to over 20 years and five consecutive games lost on the road vs. the Patriots.

The two most recent matchups came in 2019 and 2021, where the Patriots beat the Browns 27-13 and 45-7, respectively. Now in 2025, the Browns' streak is up to 33 years and six straight matchups without a win in New England.

Belichick began this streak for the Browns in 1995, and after moving to the Patriots job in 2000, he's tacked on the next five losses for the Browns, extending this streak to the 33-year length it's at now.

Not only will this be the first matchup between the Browns and the Patriots without Belichick on the sideline since he left the NFL after 2023, but it's going to be the first matchup between the two teams since 1987 without Belichick on the sidelines.

Breaking the streak won't be easy for the Browns, as the Patriots have found their franchise quarterback in Maye, while the Browns are still trying to find their quarterback of the future.

Not only will the Browns be trying to secure their third win of the season and their first winning streak, but they will also look to end a streak in New England that's left the Browns winless for the last 33 years.
