Browns eyeing Rams' Sean McVay's disciple as 'top candidate' for head coach job

The Cleveland Browns' head coaching search has been an odd and frustrating one for fans. Mike McDaniel backed out of his interview to take a lesser job with the Los Angeles Chargers as OC, and Jesse Minter took the rival Baltimore Ravens job.

Grant Udinski of the Jacksonville Jaguars is a strong candidate and could be hired soon. But the Browns might play the waiting game, as they're eyeing an offensive mind whose team is in the Championship game.

According to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, the Browns are eyeing a disciple of Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay in a young passing game coordinator, Nate Scheelhaase.

Sean McVay disciple Nate Scheelhaase is top candidate for Browns HC job

"Sources say they plan to meet with Rams passing game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase early in the week," Rapoport reports, "as he is among their top candidates."

The Browns have shown interest in a pair of young offensive-minded coaches, with Scheelhaase and Udinski two of the more interesting names to watch this hiring cycle.

While their head coaching search might not seem to be going well, if they could bring in one or the other, it would be a welcome result.

Teams going after the McVay tree is a recent trend in the NFL. Just as there is a Kyle Shanahan tree, the McVay tree is one that continues to grow and permeate the league.

This offseason, Scheelhaase is likely the top option for teams looking for a bright, young, ascending offensive mind to become their head coach.

This report indicates the Browns have a serious interest in Scheelhaase. They have to wait until the NFC Championship is over to interview the Rams' passing game coordinator, but it would be a wait well worth it if they could hire him as soon as possible.

If the Rams get eliminated by the Seattle Seahawks, then the Browns would be able to hire Scheelhaase to be their head coach right away.

The Browns' head coaching job might be quickly filled depending on the outcome of the NFC Championship game, so Browns fans have reason to tune in, at least for the NFC side of things, as their future head coach might be on the sidelines.
