Browns cutting ties with Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel could be result of shocking starting QB winner

The Cleveland Browns' quarterback room doesn't quite have math that adds up.

Someone will win the starting job for Week 1. Someone will earn the backup spot. Someone will slot in as the third QB. And someone will likely be cut or traded.

The quartet of Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders will spend much of the summer competing with one another.

NFL announcer Andrew Siciliano thinks one of the veterans will win the Week 1 starting job.

"If there were a game tomorrow, it would be Kenny Pickett or Joe Flacco," Siciliano said. "I might lean Kenny Pickett right now. If Shedeur Sanders hadn't fallen to the fifth round, your quarterback room would be Kenny Pickett, Joe Flacco and Dillon Gabriel, and you would probably say it's a competition between Pickett and Flacco. Pickett's the younger one and Dillon Gabriel is going to learn and be the understudy and learn from two veterans. If one was demonstrably better, then sure, but it's Kenny Pickett and Joe Flacco."

Siciliano's reference of Sanders' low draft position suggests he doesn't necessarily think it's a given Sanders sticks around.

But if Sanders outperforms Gabriel, maybe it's the surprise third-round pick who could be let go.

Or, Cleveland decides to keep two rookies in its QB room and get rid of whichever of Pickett or Flacco doesn't win the gig.

There's still multiple months until any final decision here has to be made. It's plenty of time to keep speculating about it.
