There won't be a Triple Crown winner in 2025, as Sovereignty isn't participating in the Preakness Stakes.

This extends the drought to seven years, as the last Triple Crown winner came in 2018. That was Justify. Three years before that, in 2015, was American Pharoah, the first Triple Crown winner since 1978.

Journalism, the runner-up at the 2025 Kentucky Derby, is a heavy favorite for the Preakness Stakes. He owns 8-5 odds, with Sandman the closest at 4-1 odds. Sandman finished seventh at the Kentucky Derby.

The only other horse to race at the Kentucky Derby was American Promise, who has 15-1 odds for the Preakness Stakes. Six of the nine participants this weekend won't have the Derby experience, but that doesn't lower their chances of winning the Stakes.
