Bronny James has had a rough go of it in the big leagues so far.
While the former second-round pick has surely enjoyed competing alongside his father, LeBron, on the Los Angeles Lakers, he likely hasn’t been thrilled with his perimeter shooting and playmaking struggles.
James is currently averaging 2.7 points and 1.1 assists per game for his career, shooting 37.4% from the field and 34.8% from beyond the arc. With James’ Hall of Fame father surprisingly leaving the Lakers after eight long seasons, it feels appropriate to speculate about the 21-year-old NBA’s future.
Fox Sports’ Rob Parker believes that James should retire after only two seasons, as he believes things will only get worse from here.
“Bronny James should retire,”Parker said Wednesday. “I would retire… Bronny should retire… Because here’s the thing. The worst part now is the jig is up, and then they’ll pull the plug on him and just give him the money to go away.”
“Your dad is not here anymore. That’s the reason you were here. And that was a nice gesture for LeBron… We’ll pick up his contract so that he’ll have some money… But come on. What did Bronny James do to deserve any of that? I’m sorry. I’m not buying it.”
Bold is certainly one word to describe Parker’s offseason suggestion for James. While the USC product hasn't found his footing in the big leagues yet, it’s unlikely he’ll call it quits this early. Perhaps more G-League demotions are on the horizon, but James didn’t work this hard to exit the pros in his early 20s.
Will James ever develop into a serviceable NBA player? Maybe not, but regardless of whether James joins his father on his new team (via trade), it’s preposterous to suggest he won’t stop trying at this stage of his career.
