Broncos undrafted rookie may push veteran off roster after taking training camp by storm

The Denver Broncos, a team with a rich history in signing undrafted players, may have another one to add to the list.

Former North Carolina Central wide receiver Joaquin Davis has been as impressive as anyone in Broncos training camp thus far, and if he can turn that into some strong performances in preseason games, it's going to be hard to keep him off the 53-man roster.

Davis ran a 4.4 40-yard dash at the HBCU combine this spring and signed with the Broncos following the draft. He also has great size at 6-foot-4 and can play special teams. That could put the roster spot of veteran Trent Sherfield in danger.

The Broncos signed Sherfield this offseason, mainly for his skills as a special teams player. It was thought that because of his ability to be a core special teams player, he would make the 53-man roster behind the five wide receivers everyone expects to make it... Courtland Sutton, Marvin Mims, Jr., Devaughn Vele, Troy Franklin and Pat Bryant.

However, with the ascension of Davis, the coaching staff may have to give that some long thought.

The Broncos undrafted WRs have all had their moments at points in the first two weeks of camp. Coming on the last couple days has been Joaquin Davis, who just made a nice TD catch in the front of the end zone in 7-v-7s.

The Broncos open up their preseason slate on the road this Saturday night against the San Francisco 49ers. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 pm MT. Davis will be one of the top players for Broncos fans to keep tabs on in that one.
