Brisbane Roar and Wellington Phoenix are in action for the first time in the new year when they square off at Suncorp Stadium in round 11 of the Australian A-League on Saturday. Michael Valkanis’s men are one of just two teams yet to lose a home game in the league this season and could rise into first place with a win this weekend.
Justin Vidic grabbed the headlines for Brisbane Roar on New Year’s Eve as he struck in the 92nd minute to hand them a 2-1 victory over Central Coast Mariners at the Central Coast Stadium.
This followed a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Macarthur on December 19, a result which saw their run of six straight league matches without defeat come to an end.
Brisbane Roar have picked up 18 points from their 10 A-League matches so far to sit third in the table, level on points with Sydney FC and Macarthur, and two points off league leaders Auckland FC.
Elsewhere, Wellington Phoenix endured a rough end to the year, losing three of their four matches in December, including a 5-1 hammering against Melbourne Victory last Monday.
This poor run of results has seen Giancarlo Italiano’s men drop into 10th place in the league standings, just three points above rock-bottom Central Coast Mariners.
While breaching opposition defences has come with relative ease for the Phoenix, who have netted 14 goals in the league, their struggles have come at the back, where they have conceded the second-highest number of goals so far (20).
