The Milwaukee Brewers are banking on one of their top prospects to become a star.
They further displayed their confidence in the shortstop by signing him to an extension on Monday.
"Source confirms: Infield prospect Cooper Pratt finalizing eight-year, $51 million contract with Brewers," The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal wrote on X. "Deal includes two club options with escalators on option years. Has played only three games above AA. Brewers No. 6 prospect per The Athletic's Keith Law."
Pratt, 21, was a sixth-round draft pick of the Brewers in 2023 from Magnolia Heights School in Mississippi. He spent the 2025 season at Double-A Biloxi after playing just 23 games at High-A Wisconsin and Single-A Carolina in 2024.
Why Brewers signed Pratt to an extension
Pratt was in big league camp with the Brewers during spring training, hitting .294/.405/.294 with 10 hits (none for extra bases) in 42 trips to the plate. He connected for eight home runs and stole 31 bases in 36 attempts in 120 games in Double-A last season.
"A Minor League Gold Glove winner in 2024, Pratt continues to flash impressive timing and instincts at a premium position, and while his decent speed doesn’t give him huge range, his arm strength and accuracy still help him on some of the deeper throws," Pratt's MLB Pipeline bio reads. "His combination of contact and defense gives him a solid floor and a fighting shot to be Milwaukee’s shortstop of the future, even with Jesús Made and Luis Peña charging up behind him."
Pratt opened the year at Triple-A Nashville after receiving a three-game cup of coffee at the highest level of the minors in 2025. Clearly, they think highly of the youngster.
