BREAKING: Mercedes Mone's reign of terror officially ends, loses her TBS Title to fan-favorite AEW star

̉̉AEW star Mercedes Mone failed to defend her TBS Championship on tonight's New Year's Smash edition of Dynamite. She held the title for 584 days, making her the longest-reigning TBS Champion of all time. However, Willow Nightingale did the unthinkable tonight.

The TBS Champion hasn't had much luck in the past month. She lost multiple titles to Alex Windsor and Red Velvet. Not only that, at Worlds End, Mercedes Mone and Athena couldn't win the AEW World Tag Team Championship from the Babes of Wrath. The Babes of Wrath's Willow Nightingale has pinned her twice. The latter pin happened at the recent pay-per-view.

The two had a great match in the main event of tonight's Dynamite. Shockingly, Willow Nightingale managed to dethrone her. Many stars joined her to celebrate the historic win while The CEO sat appalled at ringside. Willow is also the first woman to hold two AEW championships at once.

Tony Khan dismisses a major rumor about Mercedes Mone

The former TBS Champion won over a dozen titles by wrestling worldwide. However, many accused her of burying multiple championships just for her to set a record. She didn't lose a match for over a year.

Speaking on Takedown, AEW President Tony Khan shed light on the mentality behind her booking. He said he wanted Mercedes Mone to win every match until she faced then-AEW Women's World Champion Toni Storm.

“Mercedes is tremendous to work with, and I had been adamant about building Mercedes up and having Mercedes continue to win and win and win. Then finally, you have this match… Mercedes versus Toni Storm — the TBS champion versus the world champion for the world title… and Timeless Toni Storm picked up that great win," he said.

It will be interesting to see what comes next for Mercedes, as the TBS Championship was one of the most important titles in all the gold she holds.
