Brayan Bello's improvement raises bigger sustainability questions for Red Sox

1 hour ago 2

Brayan Bello has been a hot topic for the Boston Red Sox, as he is the one starting pitcher that requires an opener before he comes in to pitch. When he has an opener, he usually does very well; on the other hand, when he comes in without an opener, he falls apart immediately.

However, while it seems like the opener is a solution, it really isn’t. In four of the “opener” starts Bello has had, the relievers that came before him have been getting destroyed.

Jovani Moran and Tyler Samaniego have given up a combined nine runs, giving Boston a 20.25 ERA in the first inning. Most recently was last night, when Samaniego gave up four runs in the first inning, and then Bello went seven innings without giving up a run.

Considering this, Bello’s spot in the rotation needs to be put under the microscope. Even if he does well, having a reliever get blown up instead of him isn’t helping.

Bello needs to be replaced ASAP

Right now, the rotation includes Bello along with Ranger Suarez, Sonny Gray, Payton Tolle, and Connelly Early. All four of the other pitchers are doing amazing, with sub-3.00 ERAs.

Bello, though, is the odd man out. He’s posted a 2-5 record, a 5.63 ERA, 40 Ks, and a WHIP of 1.643 in 56 innings pitched

Overall, the Sox are almost guaranteed to lose when he takes the mound; whether it be him who falls apart, or the reliever in front of him.

The only solution comes with time

Garrett Crochet

The only and upcoming solution to this problem is the return of Boston’s ace, Garrett Crochet. Crochet has been out for a while now with shoulder inflammation, and should return in a couple weeks.

Upon his return, the Sox will have to ultimately make a decision with Bello. Whether it be optioning him to AAA, benching him, or somehow trading him, the Sox have to decide.
