A major need for the Atlanta Braves this offseason was coming to terms with a shortstop they could depend on. They did just that, or thought they did, when they signed Ha-Seong Kim to return on a one-year, $20 million contract.
However, it will be a while before fans see him on the field. He will now begin his second-straight season on the IL after undergoing surgery to repair a torn tendon in his right middle finger.
How did Kim sustain this injury? Well, it was in one of the most unusual ways possible. He slipped on a sheet of ice in his native Korea last week.

Braves' 'wish list' may be something completely out of their control
Bleacher Report's Zachary D. Rymer recently came out with his wish list for all 30 MLB teams. While many of these items include adding a starting pitcher or impact bat, Rymer does suggest grabbing a starting pitcher, but he also follows that up with "No more fluke injuries."
"After Freddy Peralta landed with a division rival, they simply can't let that slide. Atlanta really doesn't need anything else, though Ha-Seong Kim's fluke hand injury ought to have them hoping for no more bad news. Especially after the last two years, the last thing this franchise needs is further injury trouble."
Atlanta could surely use another impact starter to pair with Chris Sale and Spencer Strider. But their biggest need is to go into Spring Training with no more fluke injuries.
That could be tough for a team that has seen almost nothing but injuries from key contributors the last two years. The last thing they need is for someone like Chris Sale to get injured while riding his bike, as he did during the 2022 season with the Boston Red Sox.
