Braves trade idea lands Yankees' underperforming Gold Glove shortstop to replace Mauricio Dubon

Shortstop has been somewhat of a revolving door for the Atlanta Braves following Dansby Swanson's departure in free agency.

Orlando Arcia was an All-Star in 2023, but watched his OPS drop from .741 to .625 from one season to the next. Nick Allen is a tremendous defender at the position, but his bat left much to be desired.

Mauricio Dubon was acquired from the Houston Astros in exchange for Allen in November. Atlanta hopes he provides a little more power and versatility on defense. The 31-year-old has won two Gold Glove Awards as a utility player.

However, there's still time for the Braves' president of baseball operations,  Alex Anthopoulos, to make a late spring training trade.

Braves named best landing spot for Yankees' Anthony Volpe

Anthony Volpe has fallen short of expectations with the New York Yankees after graduating through the minors as the organization's top prospect. He won a Gold Glove Award in 2023 but had minus-6 outs above average and a .663 OPS in 2025.

So, why would the Braves entertain trading for him? FanSided's Mark Powell wrote Thursday that he's a better option than Dubon.

"There are plenty of teams that might take a chance on Volpe. Not everyone can achieve greatness in New York City, especially not when they're anointed before reaching the big leagues," Powell wrote.

"The Atlanta Braves make a lot of sense as a possible landing spot. Mauricio Dubon is their starting shortstop. Ozzie Albies, fresh off an impressive World Baseball Classic, will hit free agency in the next couple of years. Volpe can play each position. It's worth a call for Atlanta, especially if Volpe continues to struggle."

It's hard to believe the Braves would consider a move like this, especially without knowing the long-term effects of Volpe's offseason surgery and poor play.
