Fran McCaffrey coaching timeline

Lehigh: 1985-1988

McCaffrey's first head coaching job came with Lehigh, as he was promoted from assistant to head coach in 1985 when he was just 26 years-old. In that time, Lehigh got better each season, leading to the team making the NCAA tournament in 1988.

McCaffrey led Lehigh to a 21-10 record and their second NCAA Tournament in program history. However, McCaffrey would not stick around with Lehigh long, as he left the program in 1988 to take an assistant coach job at Notre Dame.

UNC Greensboro: 1999-2005

After a decade with the Fighting Irish, McCaffrey got his second head coaching job, this time with UNC Greensboro. McCaffrey would remain with the Spartans for six seasons, producing four winning seasons and an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2001.

Overall, McCaffrey won 90 games at UNC Greensboro, including a Southern conference tournament title and a regular season title.

Siena: 2005-2010

Siena hired McCaffrey in 2005, where he helped turn the Saints program around. McCaffrey spent six seasons with Siena, producing a winning season each year, which included the five-straight 20-win campaigns.

From 2007 to 2010, McCaffrey's Siena team made three-straight NCAA Tournaments by winning the MAAC regular season title and the MAAC conference tournament title each season. McCaffrey's work with the Saints helped him land a Power Five job for the first time.

Iowa: 2010-2025

McCaffrey is most known for his time at Iowa, which spanned 15 seasons from 2010 to 2025. In that span, McCaffrey had 13 winning seasons, seven NCAA Tournament appearances, and a Big 10 tournament title in 2022.

Despite McCaffrey's success, which included 297 wins, Iowa never made it to the Sweet 16 under his watch. Still, McCaffrey is the Hawkeyes' program leader in both games-coached and wins by a head coach. In fact, McCaffrey's 15 years leading the Hawkeyes is the longest tenure by any head coach in program history.

Ultimately, Iowa fired McCaffrey in 2025 following two-straight seasons having missed the NCAA Tournament.

Penn: 2025-Present

Once he was available, McCaffrey decided to take the head coaching job at his alma mater: Penn. McCaffrey played at Penn from 1979 to 1982, and upon retiring he became a Quakers' assistant for a year before joining Lehigh's coaching staff.

In his first season with Penn, McCaffrey led the Quakers to an 18-11 record and an Ivy League conference championship. It was the first time that Penn made the tournament since 2018, and only the second time since 2008.
