Braves, Phillies rivalry reignites with everything on the line in Wild Card Series

The Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies are about to add another chapter to their heated National League East rivalry, but this time there will be no margin for error.

Atlanta will host Philadelphia in a best-of-three National League Wild Card Series beginning Tuesday at Truist Park. Game 1 is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock.

The Braves enter October as the No. 3 seed after winning their seventh NL East championship in nine seasons. Philadelphia secured the sixth seed on the final day of the regular season, setting up a postseason matchup between two clubs that know each other extremely well.

Atlanta should enter the series with confidence after controlling the regular-season matchup. The Braves went 9-4 against Philadelphia in 2026, and Truist Park provides another advantage after Atlanta went 52-29 at home.

Chris Sale could be the biggest factor.

Atlanta plans to start  Sale in Game 1, followed by Tyler Mahle in Game 2 and Grant Holmes if a decisive Game 3 is necessary. Sale has been particularly effective against Philadelphia, going 3-0 with a 1.42 ERA and 23 strikeouts over his first 19 innings against the Phillies this season.

Offensively, the Braves will look toward Ronald Acuña Jr., Austin Riley, Matt Olson and Michael Harris II to provide the production necessary in a short series.

Philadelphia, however, remains dangerous because of its postseason experience and power. Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber give the Phillies two hitters capable of changing a game with one swing. Schwarber entered Atlanta earlier this month leading MLB with 44 home runs.

Philadelphia also knows something about ending Atlanta’s season. The Phillies eliminated the Braves in the NLDS in both 2022 and 2023.

That history adds another layer to this matchup.

Atlanta dominated the 2026 regular-season series, but October baseball can erase six months of results quickly. In a three-game series, one dominant pitching performance, defensive mistake or late home run can completely change everything.

For the Braves, this series represents an opportunity to finally return the favor and send their division rival home.
