Braves' Ha-Seong Kim makes contract decision ahead of MLB free agency

The Atlanta Braves must have a productive offseason. They have multiple decisions to make on key players, including Marcell Ozuna and Raisel Iglesias.

After a disappointing 2025 season, the Braves must be active this offseason to add depth and more durable starters. In August, Atlanta picked up Ha-Seong Kim off waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays, and he had a strong finish to the season.

Braves' Ha-Seong Kim expected to opt out of current deal

Per Jon Heyman, Ha-Seong Kim has opted out of his current deal and will test free agency this winter.

The shortstop free agency class is really weak this offseason. Bo Bichette headlines the list, but even he may not be a shortstop for much longer. The next best free agent after Kim is Isiah Kiner-Falefa.

Kim signed a one-year deal before the 2025 season with the Rays, which included a player option for 2026. He only played 48 games this season. 24 with the Braves, and 24 with the Rays. In the 24 games with Atlanta, he hit three home runs, batted .253 with an OPS+ of 93.

Not exactly super productive, but Atlanta may want to consider signing Kim, because they did not receive a home run from a shortstop until the team's 137th game.

Nick Allen was a great defensive specialist, but the Braves desperately need some infield depth if they want to compete in 2026.
