Braves get great news on Drake Baldwin amid Triple-A rehab assignment

The Atlanta Braves have been weathering the storm a bit lately due to a few injuries at the catcher position. Both Drake Baldwin and Sean Murphy are on the injured list right now.

While Murphy's loss is big, the absence of Baldwin, who was having a breakout sophomore season, was massive for this team. But, fortunately, some good news is coming for Atlanta with its superstar catcher.

According to Grant McAuley of 929 The Game, the Braves are finally sending Baldwin on a rehab assignment beginning Saturday, which hopefully means a return to the big league roster is near.

Braves get good Drake Baldwin news amid rehab assignment

"Braves C Drake Baldwin will begin his rehab assignment with Triple-A Swinnett on Saturday," McAuley reports. "If all goes well, he could be activated from the 10-day IL as soon as Tuesday."

This report is some very welcome news for the Braves, as they're finally getting Baldwin close to the Majors as his rehab assignment opens the window for his return.

He's been out for close to a month now, last playing for the Braves on May 18 before sustaining his oblique injury, which has kept him out for a while.

But now, this report from McAuley reveals that Baldwin is closing in on an MLB return, which could come as soon as Tuesday, June 16.

Before his IL stint, Baldwin had a .303 batting average with 13 homers, 38 RBIs, six doubles, 57 hits, and a .932 OPS in 188 at-bats for the Braves.

That .932 OPS is still the best on the Braves roster, with Matt Olson at .902 OPS close behind. The Braves catcher has been incredible this season, and getting him back as soon as possible would be ideal.

Fortunately, with this Triple-A rehab assignment report, it looks like Baldwin is closing in on a return to the big leagues. If all goes well during this rehab assignment, the 25-year-old catcher might be back in the lineup for Atlanta in the next week or so.
