Braves expected to cut ties with $35 million 2021 World Series Champ, three-time All-Star, let him walk in 2026 free agency

The Atlanta Braves have made plenty of moves this offseason, but it seems they might be setting up a painful loss in next year’s free agency period.

According to Fansided’s Chris Landers, 2021 World Series champ and core Brave player, Ozzie Albies, won’t be re-signed by Atlanta. He had his career-worst year at the plate, and he’s only getting older.

“For years Albies has been a foundational piece for the Braves, but recent evidence suggests this relationship has just about run its course. Albies is coming off a career-worst season at the plate, and his defensive value figures to continue eroding as he enters his 30s. Whichever team signs him is going to get a potentially nasty decline, and the fact that Atlanta has let Albies reach his walk year rather than extending him before now suggests they don't trust his production moving forward,” Rotman wrote.

This past season, Albies slashed .240/.306/.365/.671 with 23 doubles, 16 home runs, and 74 RBI in 157 games played. While these stats don’t seem too bad, keep in mind two years ago he was hitting .280 with an OPS of .849, and has 30 doubles, 33 homers, and 109 RBI.

Right now, Albies has one year left on his contract, where he’ll make seven million dollars. He’s then projected to get a five-year, $116 million deal as his next contract. However, with his down year, it may be unlikely that he gets it from Atlanta.

If he has a bounce-back year, maybe Atlanta reconsiders. Otherwise, it may be time for fans to start saying their goodbyes now.
