Braves announce plans for Spencer Strider, potentially delay activation

The Atlanta Braves finally got Spencer Strider back from elbow surgery, but he quickly landed back on the injured list. The Braves have revealed the next steps for his recovery.

Strider sustained a hamstring injury while playing catch. He last pitched on April 16 after missing nearly all of the 2024 season. He received injections to help his injury, but the Braves plan on having him throw a simulated game before he can return.

"Strider will throw five innings, approximately 70-75 pitches, in a simulated game before Wednesday night's game against the Nationals," wrote MLB.com's Mark Bowman. "The Braves will evaluate the session and his recovery before determining whether he could be activated to make a start during next week's series at Nationals Park."

Strider threw 97 pitches in his only outing this season. However, Bowman noted that his hamstring felt fine during a 40-plus-pitch side session. Getting Strider back could help the Braves make a push for the postseason.

"I feel good about my chances to give us a chance to win if I’m out there," Strider said before the team announced its plan, per Bowman. "But it’s not up to me."

The Braves could look at his simulated game and send him on another rehab assignment. That would further delay his return to the big leagues. However, the team clearly does not want to risk putting Strider on a big league mound until they are 100 percent sure he's ready. He signed a six-year, $75 million deal in 2023, but has struggled with staying healthy.

Strider was an All-Star in 2023 and finished fourth in the National League Cy Young Award race. However, he has made just three starts for the Braves since then.
