Brandin Podziemski became the latest 2023 first-round pick to sign a long-term extension on Saturday, joining a group headlined by Victor Wembanyama, but among the names still unsigned past 2026-27 is Brandon Miller.

The Hornets standout has yet to agree to an extension despite reports that a deal is expected to get done at some point.

As the deadline nears, Miller faces the possibility of restricted free agency next summer.

Here's what you need to know about the deadline Miller and the Hornets are up against.

Extension deadline for Brandon Miller

Teams have until Oct. 19 at 6 p.m. ET to sign 2023 first-round picks to a contract extension. If no deal is agreed upon by that point, Miller and others under the same circumstances will become restricted free agents in the summer.

A lack of an extension doesn't mean the end of Miller's time in Charlotte by any means, as restricted free agency comes with the ability for a team to match any offer sheet a player signs, but it could take some flexibility away from the Hornets next summer.

Miller isn't the only extension candidate without a deal as the deadline approaches. Anthony Black and Cason Wallace are among the 2023 picks unsigned beyond 2027, while Victor Wembanyama, Ausar Thompson, Amen Thompson, Keyonte George and Podziemski have all signed long-term deals.

After trading LaMelo Ball and Miles Bridges this summer, most figured extending Miller would be a natural next step for the Hornets as they solidify their long-term core. There is still time to get a deal done, but Charlotte has less than a week to iron out those details.
