The Boston Red Sox took a low-risk chance on former top prospect Brendan Rodgers this offseason, but it remains uncertain if he truly has a chance to play. Rodgers was injured last season and played in fewer than 45 games for the Houston Astros.
FanSided’s Cody Williams predicted that Rodgers will be a roster cut, despite being invited to Major League Spring Training after signing a minor league deal. The move was seen as an option for a once-promising infielder looking to revive his career.
“The Red Sox invited Brendan Rodgers to spring training after signing the former Gold Glover to a minor league deal this offseason. On Boston's part, it's a smart dice roll on a player whose career has simply taken a stark decline recently, but is still just 29 years old,” he wrote.
Rodgers, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2015 MLB Draft, showed upside early in his career with the Colorado Rockies and was one of the best high school players in America during his prep days. However, injuries and tough offensive production have derailed much of his career.
For Boston, the signing doesn’t carry much financial risk, but it offers potential infield depth if Rodgers rediscovered his form.
Still just 29, Rodgers has a chance to do something special if he can do what he can, but it seems unlikely as of now.
