The Chicago Cubs have shown over the past decade that they’re always looking to save money, an unfortunate reality for a team that should spend a lot more. While the Cubs have to make smart decisions and not pay guys just to do so, Ian Happ is an interesting case.
The veteran outfielder recently spoke about his want to speak about a contract with the front office, showing a willingness to talk with the organization if conversations were to pick back up.
“Going back to the last time, I've always said I'd be open to talking about anything," he said, per Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun Times.
A switch-hitter with power and a veteran presence, he has become one of the Cubs’ most consistent contributors in recent seasons.
His leadership inside the clubhouse is just another layer on top of all of this, making him more than just an on-field player they should want. The issue, however, is that the Cubs have let players like Happ walk in the past.
Not to say that he’s elite, but letting a 120 OPS+ hitter walk to not replace him with a comparable player would be tough to justify.
From the Cubs’ perspective, roster direction will play a key role. With young talent filtering mixed with some veterans, the Cubs could realistically keep him and still play their prospects in the future.
Regardless, his openness keeps the door wide.
