The Boston Red Sox could be heading toward a notable roster shakeup, with many suggesting in the past that Masataka Yoshida could get traded or released. Yoshida has dealt with injuries and doesn’t have much of a place to play right now.
FanSided’s Cody Williams predicted that the team will explore trading Yoshida before the season, making him an intriguing option.
After two seasons in Boston, Yoshida’s fit in the roster has become a question mark.
“Some Red Sox fans will be doing cartwheels in the street should this come to pass, and it seems like we're certainly trending in that direction.
“For one, Masataka Yoshida's opening time with the media at the start of spring training painted the picture of a player who hasn't been particularly pleased about how his time in Boston has gone. But more than that, moving Yoshida would free up the DH spot, and make the outfield logjam less cumbersome for the Red Sox while opening up more overall roster flexibility,” he wrote.
Boston has a crowded mix of outfielders and designated hitter options, and moving Yoshida could create more at-bats for young talent while allowing the front office to get rid of his contract.
Offensively, Yoshida has shown that he can swing it, but questions about his defense and injuries are more than fair.
If Boston pursues a deal, it’ll be interesting to see how much he goes for.
