Blue Jays trade for Marlins' $56M Cy Young winner is a power move to revive injury-riddled rotation

The Toronto Blue Jays are 19-24, which is not the start they envisioned after making a World Series appearance. However, an injury-riddled start to the season will do that.

Injuries have piled up throughout the starting rotation, and there does not appear to be an easy solution at the moment. Cody Ponce was one of the first pitchers to suffer a significant injury.

“Ponce sprained his right ACL in late March, which was a severe enough injury to require season-ending surgery, but he should be available for the start of spring training. He signed a three-year, $30 million contract with the Blue Jays in December after spending three seasons in Japan. Ponce's start against the Rockies on March 30 -- when he suffered his injury -- was his first appearance in an MLB game since 2021, when he played with the Pirates,” CBS Sports wrote.

While Ponce is out for the season, he is far from the only pitcher expected to miss significant time. Several other arms remain on the injured list, making it difficult for the rotation to find any consistency or rhythm.

This is exactly why a trade is needed — not only to help stabilize the rotation, but also to bring new energy into the clubhouse. A trade for Sandy Alcantara simply makes too much sense.

“The Blue Jays have the offensive talent to be very good, but they need to overcome all of these pitching injuries. In response, the Blue Jays should give the Marlins a call about the former Cy Young Award winner. He's no stranger to trade rumors. If the Marlins opt to move him, the Blue Jays should be front of line,” SI’s Patrick McAvoy wrote.

Adding Alcantara to the rotation would be a major step in the right direction for Toronto, and the front office could continue building from there. The biggest challenge for the Blue Jays is that it will likely take more than one move to completely turn things around.

However, until those additional moves happen, Alcantara alone would bring a new level of energy to the team. The right-hander is currently on a $56 million contract, but his talent makes that a worthwhile investment. Alcantara is a former Cy Young Award winner and has already shown flashes of that form this season.
