The Toronto Blue Jays have dealt with multiple injuries to their starting rotation to begin the regular season. It started with Cody Ponce, who suffered an injury on an accidental play that could sideline him for the remainder of the year.
“Blue Jays manager John Schneider told reporters, including Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet, that right-hander Cody Ponce will have surgery to address the sprained anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. The estimated return to play timeline is six months, so it’s highly likely his season is over. He is already on the 60-day injured list,” MLB Trade Rumors’ Darragh McDonald wrote.
That injury alone was a setback, but earlier in the week, Toronto suffered another blow to its rotation. This time, the Blue Jays lost veteran Max Scherzer to the injured list.
“The Blue Jays announced Monday that right-hander Max Scherzer has been placed on the 15-day injured list due to tendinitis in his right forearm and inflammation in his left ankle. A timetable for his return to the roster has not yet been provided,” MLB Trade Rumors’ Steve Adams wrote.
With multiple starters expected to miss time, the Blue Jays may need to make a move if they hope to contend for a World Series. Adding another starting pitcher would be the most logical step, and Luis Severino is a name that makes sense for Toronto.
“Severino hasn't been great so far this season. He has a 6.20 ERA in five starts. But, he has a 3.97 career ERA. The Athletics have been good as well, but that has been the case despite Severino struggling,” SI’s Patrick McAvoy wrote.
By their standards, the Blue Jays are off to a slow start, but there is still time to turn things around. Adding a pitcher like Severino would provide stability to a rotation in need of reliable arms.
Severino is currently on a three-year, $67 million deal with the Oakland Athletics. Acquiring him would not place an overwhelming financial burden on Toronto, making a potential deal more feasible.
