The Toronto Blue Jays got off to a slow start this season, but they are now starting to find their rhythm. The Blue Jays are just two wins away from getting back to .500.
Toronto finally began to get healthy, but they may have anticipated that the injury bug would strike again. Starter Max Scherzer has returned to the injured list with back spasms.
“Max Scherzer is back on the injured list. The Toronto Blue Jays placed the three-time Cy Young winner on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with back spasms. The move came hours before Scherzer was scheduled to start against the Boston Red Sox,” ESPN wrote.
Toronto has been linked to several starting pitchers ahead of the trade deadline due to its ongoing injury issues. The club has already been mentioned as a potential landing spot for Tarik Skubal.
“Now that it’s becoming inevitable that the free-falling Detroit Tigers may have no choice but to trade two-time Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal at the deadline, rival executives believe the bidding will come down to four finalists that not only can afford the remainder of his $32 million contract, but will also be willing to give up prized prospects: The Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays and San Diego Padres,” USA Today’s Bob Nightengale wrote.
Sports Illustrated’s Patrick McAvoy believes the Blue Jays should pursue Skubal in an American League that remains wide open.
“The American League is wide open and the Blue Jays have turned their season around, despite a plethora of pitching injuries. If the Blue Jays could land Skubal, they'd be the favorite in the American League,” McAvoy wrote.
Toronto is looking for a player who can provide an immediate impact while also offering long-term value. That is exactly what Skubal brings to the table, and the organization has the resources to pursue him.
The Blue Jays are desperate to return to the World Series but remain in need of another frontline starter. For Toronto, it may ultimately come down to Skubal or bust, as they already feature several major names in their rotation.
