The Toronto Blue Jays are coming off one of the more impressive runs that Major League Baseball has seen in quite some time, as many didn't give them a chance to make it to the World Series.
Not only did the Blue Jays make it to the World Series, but they were just two outs away from beating the star-studded Los Angeles Dodgers, the most expensive team in baseball.
As the Blue Jays get ready for the remainder of the offseason, there will be some ways for them to improve, and Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report believes there's a possibility they could make a trade for one of the best players in baseball: Fernando Tatis Jr. of the San Diego Padres.
“Even with all the money that's still owed to him, Baseball Trade Values puts Tatis' surplus value at $83.3 million. That's basically Greene territory, though that shouldn't surprise anyone. Tatis has averaged 6.6 rWAR per 162 games for his career. The goal for the Padres if they were open to moving Tatis would thus be simple: Clear all the money and get multiple players back who can help right now.
“A top-of-the-rotation starter would be a must. The Padres also just plain need power, specifically on the right side of their infield and at designated hitter,” he wrote.
Blue Jays can’t trade Yesavage
While trading a player like Tatis never seems to be the right idea for a squad like the Padres, it's also important to recognize that some have suggested they could be looking to cut payroll.
If the Blue Jays could get involved for a player of his caliber, it makes sense to move whatever they have to in order to get the deal done.
As Rymer touched on, San Diego could be looking to improve its rotation, but if there's one player that shouldn't be dealt out of that deal, it's Trey Yesavage.
Toronto has to find a way to make this deal if it were to happen without including the young right-hander who proved that he already has some of the best stuff in baseball.
