The Toronto Blue Jays beat the San Diego Padres 14-0 on Wednesday night, but may have lost a starter in the process. Anthony Santander was removed from the contest in the seventh inning with left hip inflammation.
Santander has reportedly been dealing with a hip issue for a week, but played on Wednesday night. His removal is concerning, and there is no timetable for his return. Manager John Schneider announced the team's plan for Santander.
"It was a little bit awkward and I don't want to take any chances with losing him for an extended period of time, so we'll see how he is tomorrow," Schneider.
Clearly, the injury was not something minor that the Blue Jays felt was not worth risking during their comfortable win against the Padres. Santander has been dealing with this injury, and it seems to have finally caught up to him. If the Blue Jays reevaluate and see he has not improved, a stint on the injured list could be in play.
Sanatander was one of the big offseason additions by the Blue Jays. He signed a five-year, $92 million deal to join the team on the heels of a 44-home run season.

Santander was an All-Star for the first time in his career in 2024. However, he is off to a slow start with the Blue Jays. He is slashing .188/.266/.327 with just six home runs. As a team, the Blue Jays have hit the sixth-fewest home runs in baseball. The team is five games behind the New York Yankees in the American League East. Losing Santander could cost them some power in their already power-scarce lineup. Schneider's comments indicate that the Blue Jays would rather play it safe with him at this point in the year.
