The Toronto Blue Jays received devastating news this week as veteran right-hander José Berríos underwent full Tommy John surgery on his right elbow Wednesday, a procedure expected to sideline him well into the 2027 season. The outcome represents a far more serious setback than the organization initially anticipated and creates significant uncertainty surrounding one of the team’s most dependable starting pitchers.
Toronto entered the procedure hoping Berríos would require a less extensive operation. Early evaluations suggested doctors might simply repair a stress fracture and remove loose bodies from his right elbow, a scenario that would have offered a considerably shorter recovery timetable. Instead, the surgery revealed a more complicated issue that dramatically changed the outlook.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider explained that surgeons discovered a loose body attached to the ligament, making a full reconstruction unavoidable. The operation was performed by renowned orthopedic surgeon Keith Meister in Texas.
Blue Jays lose durable rotation anchor
The injury is particularly painful because Berríos had already dealt with elbow issues during Toronto’s postseason run last year. Elbow inflammation forced him to miss the Blue Jays’ World Series appearance, and his attempt at a comeback this season never fully materialized. In four rehab outings across Class-A and Triple-A, Berríos struggled, posting an 0-1 record with a 10.67 ERA while experiencing a noticeable decline in fastball velocity.
The loss also carries statistical weight. Berríos has built one of baseball’s most durable careers, appearing in 275 games with 273 starts while compiling a 108-82 career record and 1,481 strikeouts over 1,571.2 innings pitched. Last season, he remained a regular fixture in Toronto’s rotation, posting a 9-5 record with a 4.17 ERA across 31 appearances.
For the Blue Jays, replacing innings, experience, and consistency will be difficult. Tommy John surgery often allows pitchers to return successfully, but for Berríos, the immediate challenge is a lengthy rehabilitation process. For Toronto, the challenge is replacing a pitcher who had become one of the organization’s most reliable arms.
