Blue Jays dealing with an impossible bases loaded combination

1 hour ago 3

The Toronto Blue Jays find themselves in a pretty much impossible circumstance.

The Blue Jays both allow the highest batting average in the league with the bases loaded while having the lowest average in MLB while batting with the bases loaded.

This is how that looks in chart form, via MLB.com's Mike Petriello:

The Blue Jays entered today with a very silly combination of things, with the bases loaded

- the highest BA (pitching)
- the lowest BA (batting)

It's almost impossible for that to keep up, and it won't. But it's very bizarre to see. pic.twitter.com/MJFwqRN2Wv

Those numbers are both drastic, too, giving up .533 and hitting just .111. Both of those will normalize to some extent just based on regression to the mean.

They also aren't from huge sample sizes, but the season has been going long enough that even if they aren't sure-thing trends to continue, they do explain part of why the early stages of the year haven't been easy for Toronto.

Teams that hit and pitch well with runners on base are almost certainly going to be more successful in the long haul. That's just how it works.

The Blue Jays have a number of hitters needing to improve, and they've also got to start hitting for some more power.

It's a team with talent, but one that hasn't played to its potential in the early going. This crazy stat is just one example of that.
