The Toronto Blue Jays were able to get 12 appearances from Shane Bieber after the right-handed starting pitcher was traded to the team on the final day before the MLB trade deadline.
Bieber, 30, battled his way back from Tommy John surgery in April of 2024 to help lead the Blue Jays to the World Series, but they will have to wait once again as the former Cy Young Award winner has been diagnosed with a new injury.
The Athletic's Mitch Bannon announced that Bieber has run into a delay in his ramp-up period due to forearm fatigue. He will miss the beginning of the 2026 season.
Blue Jays will be without Shane Bieber for start of 2026
The update came along with the Blue Jays announcing that right-handed pitcher Bowden Francis will be undergoing Tommy John surgery and will miss the entire season, and outfielder Anthony Santander will be out five to six months as he gets left labral surgery.
This is concerning news, as Bieber has been through multiple injuries to his throwing arm over the past two years.
Toronto will now work with Kevin Gausman, Dylan Cease, Trey Yesavage, and Cody Ponce for the time being.
There's no specific timetable for when Bieber will be able take the mound for the Blue Jays, but this seems to be a significant setback as the MLB season is still over a month away.
After getting traded to Toronto from the Cleveland Guardians in July, Bieber made seven starts for the Blue Jays in the regular season, and it resulted in promising numbers after not appearing on the mound for nearly 18 months. In 2025, he finished with a 4-2 record, 3.57 ERA, and 1.02 WHIP while striking out 37 over 40.1 innings.
