Blockbuster trade idea sees Thunder part with star guard for premium draft asset

The Oklahoma City Thunder fell short of becoming the first team in over seven seasons to repeat as NBA champions.

The Thunder were eliminated in the Western Conference Finals by the San Antonio Spurs and will now look to get back to the mountaintop. It may take a big move to get there, which is why they've been linked to this massive three-team trade idea.

Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report concocted this blockbuster trade idea that sees the Thunder part ways with All-NBA guard Jalen Williams, sending him to the Detroit Pistons. The Thunder and Memphis Grizzlies get a massive haul in return.

Oklahoma City Thunder receive: No. 3 pick, Jaylen Wells, Isaiah Stewart, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, 2030 first-round pick (via DET)

Detroit Pistons receive: Jalen Williams

Memphis Grizzlies receive: Ausar Thompson, Ron Holland II, No. 12 pick (via OKC), No. 21 pick (via DET), 2031 first-round pick swap (via DET)

"Williams has already proved he can be the second-best player on a championship banner-raiser. Plus, he's well-versed in playing off of a ball-dominant backcourt star, so the fit with Cunningham could be seamless. Not to mention, Williams sits on the ideal timeline to team with Cunningham and a presumably re-signed Jalen Duren."

Williams just completed his fourth season in the league, all with the Thunder. He's developed into a core player for Oklahoma City, doing his part to lead them to the 2025 title.

However, this past season was riddled with injuries for Williams, being held to only 33 games, and he missed Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals.

The 25-year-old has proven that he is an All-Star in the league; however, he will soon be expensive. His massive five-year, $239 million extension will take effect this upcoming season.

The Thunder will carefully consider his future with the team, not only because of the contract, but the team may look to extend current valuable rotation pieces (like Cason Wallace) on declining contracts to avoid extreme second-apron tax bills.

Oklahoma City certainly has its hands full this summer, and the future of Williams could be hanging in the balance.
