Blockbuster trade idea lands Dodgers $8.2 million All-Star closer

The Los Angeles Dodgers have the second-best record in the National League. At 31-19, they lead the NL West by two games over the San Francisco Giants.

They have one of the top rosters in Major League Baseball after spending big over the winter. But they may not be done adding to their roster.

The Dodgers will obviously be in the race when the trade deadline comes around, and it's safe to assume that they will add to their roster.

Garrett Kerman of Clutch Points proposed the idea of a blockbuster trade that would land them Ryan Helsley from the St. Louis Cardinals.

"Given the demand for elite relievers and Helsley’s stature, the Cardinals should target a contender with a glaring bullpen need and a willingness to pay for premium relief help. The Los Angeles Dodgers, perennially in the market for bullpen upgrades and with a deep farm system, fit this profile," Kerman writes.

Helsley is in the final year of his contract, and it is unlikely that St. Louis will re-sign him this offseason. The Dodgers have the means to give him the kind of contract he'll want.

The proposed trade idea has the Dodgers sending prospects Nick Frasso and Josue De Paula to St. Louis along with right-hander Michael Grove.

This would allow St. Louis to restock their minor league system, but it would be win-now move for the Dodgers, who are intent on winning back-to-back World Series titles.

Helsley set a Cardinals record last year with 49 saves and is the reigning NL Reliever of the Year. He would instantly boost the Dodgers bullpen and give them an even better chance to win another ring.
