Future Hall of Fame coach Bill Belichick has been a subject of a possible head coaching role at the New York Giants since the team fired Brian Daboll. Belichick, who held multiple positions with the Giants for 12 years from 1979 to 1990, is considered one of the greatest coaches in NFL history. However, he is currently serving as the coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels.
In a lengthy message originally posted on Instagram on Friday, Belichick addressed the speculations regarding his potential return to the Giants.
"I have great respect and genuinely care for the New York Giants organization and both the Mara and Tisch families. The New York Giants played an important role in my life and in my coaching journey. It was a privilege for me to work for the Mara family and be a member of Coach Parcells’ staff for over a decade," the statement reads.•

Belichick described working under the Mara family as a privilege and detailed how his time with the Giants influenced his career. He did, however, effectively restate his commitment to UNC with the statement.

"However, despite circulating rumors, I have not and will not pursue any NFL head coaching vacancies. Since arriving in Chapel Hill, my commitment to the UNC Football program has not wavered. We have tremendous support from the university, our alumni, and the entire Carolina community. My focus remains solely on continuing to improve this team, develop players, and build a program that makes Tar Heel fans proud. We’re on to Wake Forest."The Giants fell to 2-8 on the season after losing to the Chicago Bears 24-20 in Week 10, their fourth straight defeat. A day after the game, Daboll was given his marching orders in the middle of his fourth year in charge.
Belichick's early achievement with the Giants, where he previously served as special teams coach, defensive assistant and defensive coordinator and helped the team win two Super Bowls, was the primary factor in the speculation about him rejoining the team to replace Daboll.
The former New England Patriots' coach's inaugural season as UNC's coach has been disappointing, with a 4-5 start. However, after defeating Syracuse 27-10 and Stanford 20-15, his team has now won two straight games.
Bill Belichick could get a chance to break the NFL win record if he returns to the league
Bill Belichick had coached in the NFL his whole career before taking over as UNC's coach, winning six Super Bowls with the New England Patriots. He finished his NFL career as head coach with 333 wins, only 15 wins short of tying the NFL record for most wins by a coach, which is held by the legendary Don Shula of the Miami Dolphins with 347 wins (including playoffs).
The 73-year-old coach, who departed from the Patriots at the end of the 2023 season, had previously been speculated to potentially return to the NFL in pursuit of the record. However, this prospect appears increasingly unlikely following his dismissal of links with the New York Giants.
