The Ottawa Senators have announced today that they have extended Claude Giroux to a 1 year $2 million contract. The contract could be as much as $2.75 million including bonuses.
This is an important move for the Senators to solidify an important veteran core piece of a Senators team on the rise. They made the playoffs for the first time since 2017 last season with Giroux proving to be a key factor.
The 37 year old forward tallied 15 goals and 35 assists for 50 points in 81 games last season. He also recorded 1 goal and 4 assists in 6 playoff games in the Sens 1st round series against the rival Toronto Maple Leafs in the battle of Ontario.
The 18 year vet has been with this Ottawa squad since the 22-23 season. He was signed that offseason after a legendary run with the Philadelphia Flyers came to a close as he was shipped off to the Florida Panthers in the 2022 trade deadline. Over the course of his 3 year stint so far with the team, Giroux has registered 71 goals and 122 assists for 193 points in 245 games.
Giroux will likely continue to play in a top 6 role this upcoming season for a Senators team on the rise that will look to take another step forward this year. After all the rumors and speculation heading into this offseason that he would be on the move, the Ontario native will be potentially ending his career in a Senators uniform after all.
