The New York Knicks won’t be spending much money this offseason. Having just a $5.7 million taxpayer exception to work with, the team will be prioritizing depth additions over splash signings.
One name that has come up recently is Dennis Schroder. SNY’s David Vertsberger expects the Knicks to target the long-time veteran point guard in free agency.
“
Schroder is a highly dependable bench point guard that pestered the Knicks in the first round of last year’s playoffs,” Vertsberger wrote. “
He’ll consistently bring you pesky defense and paint touches, and would be a clear upgrade over many of New York’s bench guards from last season.”
Schroder spent time with the Brooklyn Nets, Golden State Warriors, and Detroit Pistons this past season. He averaged 13.1 points and 5.4 assists per game across those three teams. As mentioned by Vertsberger, Schroder gave the Knicks plenty of fits during the first-round against Detroit, averaging 12.5 points per game while shooting 49 percent from the field and 48 percent from three-point range off the bench in the series.
The Knicks struggled to find consistent bench production outside of Miles McBride last season. Cameron Payne, Delon Wright, and Tyler Kolek were all in and out of the rotation. Signing Schroder would give the Knicks more consistency and quality backup point guard play.
Despite Sacramento being the leading candidate to land Schroder at the moment, Vertsberger believes the Knicks could swoop in and snag the 31-year-old.
“The prevailing rumor has him ending up in Sacramento, but perhaps the Knicks being closer to contention give them an edge,” he said.
