A new ranking of the best college campuses in the United States has crowned a California university as the nation’s top spot, highlighting the Golden State’s continued dominance in higher education and campus life.

University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) ranked No. 1 overall, beating out hundreds of institutions nationwide thanks to its combination of academics, facilities, and student experience, according to the latest data compiled by Niche, an online platform with comprehensive college information.

Located in LA’s affluent Westwood neighborhood, UCLA’s sprawling 419-acre campus is often described as a “college in a garden,” known for its lush landscapes and iconic architecture. With more than 33,000 undergraduates and over 125 majors, the university pairs elite academics with a vibrant campus culture, according to raving reviews on the platform.

Student reviews played a major role in the ranking — and they paint a largely positive picture.

“As a first-year student I enjoy being at UCLA,” one freshman noted. “The food is decent and there are many options on the hill. I feel like I am challenged academically here.”

UCLA is also ranked number one for best food on a college campus.

The freshman also noted that while class enrollment can be stressful, “overall [I’m] happy with my decision to enroll.”

Virginia Tech and its 2,600-acre campus took took the 4th spot on the list. AP

The number one public university in the country has an acceptance rate of under 10 percent.

California didn’t just take the top spot — it also secured another place in the top three.

California Baptist University in Riverside ranked No. 3, earning praise for its scenic campus and supportive environment.

“The campus is so pretty, making the entire environment feel so peaceful,” one student wrote, echoing broader feedback about its welcoming atmosphere and modern facilities.

Both California campuses snagged up a reputation for combining academic rigor with desirable campus environments, from coastal views to state-of-the-art student amenities.

Outside the state, several campuses stood out for their scale and unique settings.

Liberty University in Virginia took the No. 2 spot, boasting a massive 7,000-acre campus nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, complete with expansive lawns and rapidly growing academic facilities.

At No. 4, Virginia Tech impressed with its 2,600-acre campus and signature Hokie Stone architecture, while Washington University in St. Louis rounded out the top five. Known for its Collegiate Gothic design and proximity to Forest Park, the Missouri-based school blends aesthetics with academic prestige.

The rankings are based on a mix of federal data and student feedback, aiming to capture what daily life on campus is actually like. According to Niche, student surveys on campus quality make up half of the overall score, with additional weight given to food (15%), housing (15%), the surrounding area (15%), and safety (5%).

The methodology draws on data from the U.S. Department of Education as well as self-reported student experiences, focusing on factors such as dorm quality, dining options, campus facilities, and access to local amenities.

The same framework is also used to generate each school’s overall campus grade, where the top five schools secure A+ grades across the board for campus quality.

From dining halls to dorms and green spaces, the modern college experience extends far beyond the classroom — and California campuses appear to be leading the way, with five universities making the top 30, including The Master’s University (#15), University of Southern California (#16), and University of San Diego (#23).
