The Chicago Bears are coming off a close NFC Divisional round loss to the Los Angeles Rams after an NFC North Division title and playoff win.
It was a wildly successful season for the Bears in Ben Johnson's first year with the team. Now, in the offseason, the Bears need to act like contenders and build a title contender.
However, after their first week of the offseason, Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report gave the Bears a lackluster 1-word assessment of their offseason. While they made a few nice moves, they were only "reactive" in nature and proactive like other teams' moves.
Bears given 'reactive' assessment of free agency moves
"Chicago Bears: Reactive," Ballentine writes. "The Bears entered the offseason with a lot of hype. While they didn't make any splashy trades or signings, they did what they could to essentially replace pieces they lost. ... They didn't get appreciably better or worse."
When Drew Dalman announced his surprise retirement, the Bears quickly answered with a trade for New England Patriots center Garrett Bradbury.
Then, after cutting Tremaine Edmunds, Chicago landed Devin Bush to be Edmunds' replacement. They also landed Coby Bryant, replacing Kevin Byard III and Jaquan Brisker.
While they've made other smaller moves, the Bears' overall offseason through the first week or so of the new league year has been underwhelming.

They haven't significantly gotten worse or better, as their biggest losses have already been filled with Bush and Bryant signing.
Their most noteworthy move was actually trading away DJ Moore for a second-round pick, which was a very nice deal.
But, with Maxx Crosby not an option in the trade market, and the Bears seemingly being conservative with their spending after a breakthrough year, it's been a lackluster offseason.
Ballentine's 1-word assessment, that the Bears' offseason has been "reactive," is a very apt description of what Ryan Poles has done through the opening portion of the offseason.
It's not been a bad offseason for the Bears, but it hasn't been an offseason deserving of the hype that was building in the lead-up to the beginning of the new league year.
