Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy says he now deals with antisemitic attacks “every day,” condemning what he described a “definitive shift” in the national climate.
“I’ve seen in my own experience, just being Barstool, the difference between how much hate I get. I never got – I mean, occasionally you get ‘hey k–e’ or ‘Jew’ or whatever,” Portnoy told CBS anchor Tony Dokoupil in a preview of an interview airing Sunday.
“It’s every day now,” he added. “There’s a definitive shift in what’s going on.”
Portnoy explained that he feels a responsibility to speak out about the surge in hate comments.
“For me, being a Jewish person, you got to step up,” he said in the brief clip. “[If] you’re kind of someone people look up to in the Jewish community, you have to be like, alright, this is not normal, ‘Ha-ha with the guys.’ People are coming in with real hate.”
Last week, an unidentified passerby hurled an antisemitic comment at Portnoy while he was filming one of his popular “One Bite” pizza reviews.
“F–k the Jews!” a man could be heard yelling at Portnoy in a video clip.
Portnoy appeared to be filming near Boardtown Pizza in Starkville, Miss., during a visit to Mississippi State University.
A crowd of people surrounding Portnoy immediately condemned the comment.
“Why don’t you come in the camera, buddy?” Portnoy said, gesturing for the man to come closer.
A man then walked up to Portnoy and his cameraman, having an inaudible conversation before eventually walking away.
“That was awful,” one woman can be heard saying in the video.
Another yelled at the heckler: “F–k you, get out of here!”
It’s at least the second time this year Portnoy has caught bigots hurling antisemitic comments at him on camera.
A person yelled, “F–k the Jews” at the Barstool honcho while he was filming outside of Terrazza in Toronto over the summer.
Some fans started to laugh, but Portnoy quickly reprimanded them.
“What are you guys f–king laughing about?” Portnoy said as he turned toward the crowd, who went quiet.
“Exactly. So here we go, one bite, everybody knows the rules. We won’t let that get … what is that Toronto hospitality there?”
