Barcelona ran riot through the second half at Camp Nou on Wednesday, burying Newcastle United in the final 45 minutes of their Champions League Round of 16 matchup and barging into the quarterfinals via a 7-2 victory for an 8-3 aggregate win.
Coming into the match with an even aggregate score after a first-leg draw on Tyneside, Newcastle put on a show in the first 45 minutes as the two sides went toe-to-toe in a breathless attacking display. Barcelona just edged it as Lamine Yamal’s penalty with the final kick of the half saw them sneak into the dressing room with a 3-2 lead, but it felt as though it remained anyone's game.
That was all Newcastle had to offer, though, as they were absolutely pummeled from the moment the second half whistle blew. By the end, Raphinha led the way with two goals and two assists, Robert Lewandowski logged a brace, and the duo of Fermin Lopez and Lamine Yamal had one each as well.
Newcastle made a mess of things at every possible opportunity, as Eddie Howe's tactic of having Dan Burn or Malick Thiaw step to Lamine Yamal in midfield was repeatedly exploited by the hosts.
With the overwhelming victory, Barcelona will advance to take on Atletico Madrid in the quarterfinals unless Tottenham Hotspur pull off a heroic and historic comeback during their second leg in London.

Barcelona vs. Newcastle key moments
FULLTIME: Barcelona 7 (8-3) 2 Newcastle
Well, this tie felt completely in the balance at halftime of this second leg, but Barcelona absolutely thrash Newcastle through the final 45 minutes and secure a comprehensive pathway to the quarterfinals!
Barcelona managed to exploit a few tactical errors from Eddie Howe and a few individual mistakes by the Newcastle players, and make the most of what they were given! A thoroughly entertaining match turns into a ruthless final scoreline, as Newcastle have been embarrassed by the end!
81st min: Somehow, Barcelona goalkeeper Joan Garcia has managed to pick up a calf injury despite Barcelona dominating this entire half, and Wojciech Szczesny will have to enter for the final minutes of the game.
72nd min: GOAL! BARCELONA! RAPHINHA MAKES IT SEVEN FOR BARCELONA! BARCELONA ARE RUNNING RIOT!
A massive error from Jacob Ramsey trying to switch the ball across his own defensive third feeds it right to Raphinha, and he makes no mistake with the gift!

61st min: GOAL! BARCELONA! THE HOSTS ARE SCORING FOR FUN! LEWANDOWSKI SCORES AGAIN!
Lamine Yamal cooks Dan Burn on the turn, and he feeds a diagonal ball to Lewandowski that wrong-foots Malick Thiaw. With the Polish star free, he fakes a shot and then powers it past Aaron Ramsdale!
The masked man is at the double, and it's all smiles for the home side who have absolutely pummeled Newcastle in the second half! This could get ugly!

56th min: GOAL! BARCELONA! THAT WILL DO IT FOR THIS ONE! ROBERT LEWANDOWSKI SCORES OFF A CORNER!
After Sandro Tonali comes off for Joe Willock due to injury, Barcelona swing in a corner and Aaron Ramsdale is rooted to the spot in goal, a fatal mistake. There is Lewandowski who rises up at the far post to meet the ball, out-jumping Tino Livramento and putting the ball past a flailing Ramsdale!
Newcastle are down and out now!

51st min: GOAL! BARCELONA! THERE'S FERMIN LOPEZ FOR BARCELONA, AND THERE'S THE MULTI-GOAL CUSHION THEY WERE LOOKING FOR!
The ball gets fed forward from the back, and a gorgeous one-time pass from Raphinha on the halfway line springs Lopez on the counter. Being chased by two defenders, Lopez races towards goal and finishes clinically past Ramsdale!
Could that be the tie finally decided??
HIGHLIGHT: Watch Fermin Lopez goal in UK
2nd half kickoff: Hope you've had enough time to catch your breath! Buckle your seatbelts because they're back under way for the second half at the Camp Nou. How can they match the end-to-end action of the first 45 minutes?
Eddie Howe has made one change, bringing on Tino Livramento for Kieran Trippier, who is on a yellow card (it 100% should have been a red) and struggled to defend Raphinha in that first half.
HALFTIME: Barcelona 3-2 Newcastle
A truly BREATHLESS first half comes to an end as Barcelona have nosed themselves in front on the penalty by Lamine Yamal with the last kick of the stage!
That was proper Champions League football between two clubs who truly want their place in the quarterfinals! Both Barcelona and Newcastle are putting on an attacking clinic, and both of them have made brainless errors at the back. Barcelona have also missed a number of huge chances to strike, and they could have been up by another goal or two if they had been more clinical.
Stay tuned, this one has been brilliant!
45+2 min: PENALTY, BARCELONA! Kieran Trippier has hold of Raphinha's arm as the Brazilian tries to meet a cross in front of goal!! It's not given initially on field, but on replay it's quite obvious, and the referee is sent to the monitor!
Indeed, he takes a short look, and not only gives a penalty, but it's a....YELLOW CARD to Trippier! That should have been a red!!! It's right in front of goal, with no attempt to play the ball! How on earth is that only yellow?!?!?!
Stepping up is Lamine Yamal, who astonishingly missed moments ago but bagged the equalising penalty in the first leg. After taking the ball from Raphinha...GOAL! BARCELONA! THE HOSTS ARE BACK IN FRONT! A BULLET PENALTY!

45+1 min: Chance, Barcelona! AN ASTONISHING, UNBELIEVABLE MISS FROM LAMINE YAMAL!
Robert Lewandowski fizzes a shot in from the left-hand side that Aaron Ramsdale stops but fumbles, and the teenager crashes onto the loose ball just three yards from the goal mouth, but he pulverizes the ball miles over the crossbar with the goal gaping! Ramsdale was on the floor, he couldn't miss from there! How on Earth has he fumbled that chance?!?!?! You'll be seeing that whiff on YouTube for years!
😱⚽ NO ONE CAN BELIEVE THE MISS FROM LAMINE YAMAL pic.twitter.com/UeQ2QrYEJD
— World Soccer Talk (@worldsoccertalk) March 18, 202644th min: Pau Cubarsi is booked for a late tackle on Anthony Gordon. The French referee could have very easily also booked Ronald Araujo for a block in the same move, but it's just the one yellow card from Letexier.
40th min: Chance, Barcelona! A HEROIC BLOCK FROM DAN BURN! Barcelona catch Newcastle in possession in midfield, and it creates a two-on-one break, but Burn spots the layoff to Robert Lewandowski and slides across to block the otherwise free chance on goal! Remember that moment if Barcelona fail to go through!
HIGHLIGHT: Watch Dan Burn block in UK
28th min: GOAL! NEWCASTLE! ANTHONY ELANGA STRIKES AGAIN! WHAT WAS THE BARCELONA BACK LINE DOING?!?!?!
Lamine Yamal gives the ball away cheaply and Newcastle spring the trap, but there's no reason this ball should have ever reached Elanga! Harvey Barnes somehow wrong-foots Ronald Araujo and sneaks a cross through his legs, and the entire Barcelona defensive line is asleep at the wheel, simply watching the ball skitter across the face of goal to Elanga who slams it into the back of the net!

22nd min: There is a real worry for Barcelona here as Eric Garcia is being withdrawn for Ronald Araujo. It's impossible to tell what is wrong, as Garcia walks off looking ok, but he heads straight down the tunnel, becoming the latest in a long line of Barcelona defensive injuries.
HIGHLIGHT: Watch Anthony Elanga second goal in UK
18th min: GOAL! BARCELONA! IT'S A MESSY SET-PIECE GOAL FOR MARC BERNAL!
As Barcelona maraud forward, Joelinton is booked for yanking Lamine Yamal back on the ball, and it means he will be suspended should Newcastle make it through to the quarterfinals. On the delivery, Dan Burn plays everyone onside and the ball finds the head of Gerard Martin, who slams it first into the ground and then to the feet of Bernal for a tap-in!
What a wild opening 20 minutes to this match!
HIGHLIGHT: Watch Marc Bernal goal in UK
15th min: GOAL! NEWCASTLE! ANTHONY ELANGA BRINGS THE VISITORS LEVEL NOT 10 MINUTES AFTER THE OPENER!
The high Barcelona line cracks under the slightest pressure, and the cross from deep on the left by Lewis Hall finds Elanga as the ball evades the entire defensive line and latches on to his feet, finishing past a charging Joan Garcia!
The game is very much on!
HIGHLIGHT: Watch Anthony Elanga goal in UK
6th min: GOAL! BARCELONA! THE HOME SIDE IS FLYING WITH AN EARLY GOAL FROM RAPHINHA!
Newcastle have begun in attack mode, but it left them vulnerable at the back! An exquisite turn by Lamine Yamal in midfield dumped a marauding Malick Thiaw to the floor, and he set Raphinha through on the break. The Brazilian laid it off to Fermin Lopez atop the penalty area, and then gives it right back to Raphinha who buries the chance!
It's a truly stunning team goal, with brilliant individual play from all three contributors! Delicious!

Kickoff: The match has begun! Eddie Howe called this the most important match in Newcastle's history. Can they rise to the challenge and become the second English club ever to win at Barcelona after Liverpool? Or will the titanic weight of Barcelona hold them down?
Lineups: The starting XI for both sides has been revealed! For Barcelona, Robert Lewandowski starts up front despite the 37-year-old also having started on the weekend, a rarity for the Polish international.
For Newcastle, Anthony Gordon starts up front, while Sandro Tonali is fit enough for a place in midfield alongside Joelinton. Anthony Elanga gets the start out wide, with Jacob Murphy rotated to the bench.

— FC Barcelona (@FCBarcelona) March 18, 2026Prematch: Welcome to coverage from The Sporting News of Barcelona vs. Newcastle!
Since returning to the Spotify Camp Nou, even on a skeleton crowd as refurbishment work continues, Barcelona have won all 12 matches at their permanent home. Hansi Flick's side has not lost at home since late October.
Newcastle, meanwhile, have slogged through notoriously poor away form this season. Their only Champions League victories this season came at Union Saint-Gilloise and Qarabag, although they do have recent Premier League victories at Tottenham and Chelsea, the latter coming this past weekend.
Can Eddie Howe conjure up something special at the Camp Nou? Newcastle have lost their two previous visits to this ground, coming in 1997 and 2002.
