Barack, Michelle Obama skip Dick Cheney’s funeral as former first lady dodges political limelight

Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle Obama, were no-shows at Dick Cheney’s funeral.

The former president and first lady were expected to skip the service for the 46th vice president of the United States, a source told People Thursday.

The private funeral for the late republican politician — who served as President George W. Bush’s VP — took place Thursday morning at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC.

Also absent from the funeral were President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance, as they were reportedly not invited, according to Axios. (Cheney famously snubbed Trump by endorsing the Democratic presidential ticket in 2024.)

Former President Bill Clinton also did not attend the event due to an alleged scheduling conflict, multiple sources reported.

Cheney died on Nov. 3 “due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease,” his relatives said in a statement at the time. He was 84.

It’s unclear why Barack and Michelle were not seen at the funeral, though the “Becoming” author has recently steered clear of political events.

In January, Michelle raised eyebrows when she did not accompany her husband to Jimmy Carter’s funeral.

At the time, CNN reported that she could not be there because she was on an extended vacation in Hawaii. Days later, Barack went solo to Trump’s inauguration while Michelle was nowhere to be seen.

A source told Page Six that Michelle intentionally missed the inauguration because she’s “no phony.”

“She’s never been fake and she’s never been phony. She’s always been very deliberate about where and how she shows up,” the source said.

Another insider told us that Michelle had “checked out” of DC life.

In April, Michelle finally addressed why she didn’t attend Trump’s swearing-in ceremony.

“It took everything in my power to not do the thing that was perceived as right, but do the thing that was right for me. That was a hard thing for me to do,” she shared on her “IMO” podcast.

These days, Michelle is focused on learning the “art of saying no.”

“After all that I’ve done in this world, if … I still have to show people that I love my country, that I’m doing the right thing, that I am … going high all the time, all I’m doing is keeping that crazy bar that our mothers and grandmothers set for us,” she said.

Michelle also shut down swirling rumors that she wasn’t by Barack’s side at the events due to marital issues.

“People couldn’t believe that I was saying no for any other reason. They had to assume that my marriage was falling apart,” she said, slamming the speculation.

In March, Michelle also said that she is no longer interested in politics because she wants her kids to live a normal life outside of the spotlight.

Michelle, 61, and Barack, 64, tied the knot in 1992 and share daughters Sasha, 24, and Malia, 27.

A rep for the Obamas did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.
