Bad Bunny is finally breaking down his Super Bowl halftime performance look.
The singer took to the stage on Sunday night as the Apple Music Super Bowl LX Halftime Show performer wearing a custom white Zara look with tons of hidden symbolism.
Though he topped his look with a blazer for part of the show, most of it was spent in a cropped custom jersey that bore the name “Ocasio” and the number 64 on the front and back.
Speculations over the significance of the number ran wild immediately until NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy shared on social media that “Bad Bunny paid homage to his uncle who played football by wearing his #64.”
While that is partially true, Bad Bunny himself clarified the sentimental nod in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar.
“1964 is the year my Tio Cutito was born. He is my mother’s brother. Everything that I know about the NFL is thanks to him,” he shared.
“When he was 17, he left to work in the United States and he never returned to Puerto Rico — though he always came to visit and stayed with us at the end of January or beginning of February. That was peak NFL post-season so I always watched the games with him. He was a big fan of the San Francisco 49ers, and their home stadium is where the Super Bowl took place this year,” said the singer, tying not only his outfit, but also the game’s location to his late uncle, who died two years ago.
He continued, “I always dreamed of taking my uncle to a Super Bowl one year, but I couldn’t; his death was sudden and without warning. So I decided to bring him on my shirt when I performed at the Super Bowl: OCASIO, his last name, the same as my mom, along with his birth year, ’64.”
Bad Bunny concluded by sharing that he dedicated his performance to his uncle before he stepped onto the field, knowing that he was present and “proud of his nephew.”
The show as a whole was an homage to Puerto Rico, celebrating the commonwealth’s rich culture through dance, food, representation of agriculture and more.
Singing favorites like “Tití Me Preguntó,” “Yo Perreo Sola” and “DtMF,” he was joined by celebrity friends such as Pedro Pascal, Jessica Alba and Cardi B as well as singers Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin.
