Baby, it’s cold outside — shop the cozy staples I’ll be living in all winter long

New York City’s been my home for the past 20 years — but as someone who grew up in sunny South Florida, I don’t think I’ll ever be a fan of winter weather.

Every year when temperatures plunge, my instinct is to shift into homebody mode. Commuting to and from the office in the cold each day is tough enough, so on nights and weekends, I want nothing more than to be horizontal on the couch with a purring cat by my side, a mug of hot tea in my hand and a candle burning close by.

But in my ongoing efforts to avoid becoming a total seasonal shut-in, I’ve found that a few key fashion pieces can go a long way.

First up? A proper puffer coat. When I first moved to NYC, I figured a wool coat would be enough to see me through the winter each year — and boy, was I wrong.

For those truly bone-chilling days, nothing beats a down parka for blocking the wind and keeping your core temperature up, and Canada Goose‘s versions are the best money can buy. Invest in one now, and thank me later.

Next, cashmere’s a must for staying cozy when it’s cold outside.

Scarves, sweaters, dresses and socks crafted from the buttery soft wool fibers can get very expensive, very fast — but C by Bloomingdale’s Cashmere has a wide variety of reasonably priced cashmere pieces in a rainbow’s worth of colors.

Whether you opt for a turtleneck, cardigan, jogger pants or wrap (the latter’s especially good to have on hand for travel, because those bagged airplane blankets are not it), you really can’t go wrong.

Last but certainly not least, you can’t let your feet freeze when that polar vortex moves in — and whether you love ’em or loathe ’em, Uggs are incredibly popular for good reason.

The signature plush sheepskin lining keeps your toes toasty, while the suede exterior adds an element of cozy to any winter outfit. Uggs are also pretty much the most comfortable shoe option on the market, making those winter errands, dog walks and coffee runs far more pleasant.
