Atlanta United holding opening talks with ex-Liverpool forward

In recent months, there has been a plethora of former talents across the top European leagues who have made their way across the pond to the MLS. Most notably, former Bayern Munich and Barcelona star Robert Lewandowski completed a free transfer move to the Chicago Fire, while Antoine Griezmann has introduced himself to the fans of Orlando SC, and Premier League veteran Jack Harrison, who is nearing a deal that would see him bolster the front line with the New England Revolution.

It's starting to look like the trend isn't finished yet, as a former Liverpool star could be making his way to The Peach State.

Nunez to Atlanta United?

As reported by The Athletic's Tom Bogert, Darwin Nunez has been identified as a target by Atlanta United, and some preliminary talks are underway.

"Atlanta United is pursuing Uruguay international forward Darwin Núñez, sources briefed on the situation tell The Athletic," writes Bogert. "Talks have commenced but are not yet advanced, sources add."

The Uruguayan went into the offseason off the heels of his first season with Al-Hilal in the Saudi Pro League, having made the move from Anfield in the previous transfer window. With Al-Hilal, Nunez recorded 10 goal involvements, sharing the forward parts of the pitch with Karim Benzema.

This isn't to omit his performances with the Uruguayan National Team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a tournament that saw Nunez take to the pitch in three matches, failing to record any goal involvements, only registering two shots throughout that slate.

If Nunez were to move to the MLS with Atlanta United, he'd join former Premier League talent and goal threat Miguel Almiron, who previously spent time at Newcastle United, where he bagged 30 goals.

Given that talks between the Uruguayan and Atlanta are only in the opening stages, anything could happen from here, but it will remain a storyline to follow in the weeks to come.
