Atlanta Braves trade pitch lands veteran for Sean Murphy due to Drake Baldwin reasoning

The Atlanta Braves enter the 2026 campaign with questions, though it’s certainly possible that they could win the NL East. For that to happen, a deal for starting pitching will likely need to take place.

One potential move was recently proposed by Ryan Shea of Sports Illustrated, who suggested Atlanta could make a trade for a starter who is reportedly on the market.

Braves Acquire: Mitch Keller

Pittsburgh Pirates Acquire: Sean Murphy

“The Braves would make this trade because they already have Drake Baldwin, who had a breakout 2025 season with a .274 AVG, 19 HR, 80 RBI, .341 OBP, and .810 OPS, signaling that he can take over the starting catcher role from Sean Murphy. With Baldwin poised to be the everyday catcher, Murphy becomes somewhat redundant. Atlanta also signed Jonah Heim as a backup, further reducing the need for Murphy.

“By trading Murphy for Mitch Keller, the Braves can address a rotation need, adding a durable mid-rotation starter who can eat innings and stabilize the pitching staff,” he wrote.

If Drake Baldwin is truly ready to take over the starting role (he is, and I think the Braves know that), moving Murphy would allow Atlanta to get better in a more important area of need.

The idea of Keller is better than the actual Kaller, but he’s still a fine No. 3 or No. 4 option on an elite team.

The Pirates also need some offensive help, and when Murphy is at his best, he can swing it.
