The Boston Red Sox had a really nice offseason, landing arms and other talent. As a result, it wouldn’t be surprising to see them move on from a veteran starter, if that’s what it calls for.
In a recent piece for Sports Illustrated, Noah Camras predicted Boston would trade left-hander Patrick Sandoval as the organization evaluates its long-term rotation plans.
“The Red Sox also have multiple players waiting in the wings in Kutter Crawford and Patrick Sandoval – who both missed the entire 2024 season due to injury – and top prospects Payton Tolle and Connelly Early,” Camras wrote.
“Thus, the Red Sox can trade from their surplus of starters, and Sandoval, who the team has reportedly discussed in trade talks this offseason, is a perfect candidate to stabilize San Diego’s rotation. Prediction: Padres acquire Patrick Sandoval from Red Sox.”
Boston’s potential willingness to deal Sandoval comes from the pitching depth it added in the offseason. If Kutter Crawford returns healthy and top prospects such as Payton Tolle and Connelly Early continue throwing the baseball at the level they have, there’s no room for Sandoval.
The trade pitch would send him to the San Diego Padres, and adding Sandoval would help improve the middle of their rotation. The Padres are in win-now mode and have made interesting trades like this in the past.
