The Athletics, who are currently taking on the Seattle Mariners in an AL West showdown, announced a pair of roster moves on Tuesday. First, Aaron Civale is heading to the 15-day injured list with a right shoulder injury.
Civale was just tagged for seven earned runs in the Athletics' loss to the Mariners Monday night. However, Civale heading to the IL is great news for top prospect Gage Jump, who is getting the call to the show, per a team announcement.
Athletics promote prospect Gage Jump
MLBTradeRumors.com's Charlie Wright wrote (on May 26):
"The 23-year-old is among the top prospects in the organization. When he first appears in a game, it will be his MLB debut. The team has yet to announce the move. The A’s have a full 40-man roster and would need to make an adjustment to add Jump."
MLB Pipeline has Jump as the third-ranked prospect in the Athletics system. He's the 41st-ranked prospect in MLB, according to MLB Pipeline.
In 38 innings with Triple-A Las Vegas this season, Jump has an ERA of 4.50, but his 56 strikeouts are pretty impressive, and likely the reason he's getting the call. His BB/9 (4.7) this season is a bit concerning, but Jump is young and still has plenty of time to develop and work on getting in the zone more consistently. The very promising stat is his 13.3 K/9 at AAA this season, and that's likely the catalyst for his call up.
